Merc Rx in Air signs

I have been relatively quiet this Mercury retrograde on this blog, mainly because work has suddenly accelerated, and I have deadlines to meet before I travel for two weeks from 13 September. I seem to travel a lot during Merc rx! (Trust me, I wish I didn’t have to!!)

This may just be the retrograde of retrogrades because there is a lot of other stuff happening astrologically while Mercury retrogrades at this time, in that the outer planets are on the move. Because the outer planets remain in direct motion or retrograde for such long periods of time, the point where they change directions or change signs or make exact contact with other planets can be momentous.

I’ve watched this for a very long time. Life does indeed accelerate for me in the run up to Mercury retrograde just when all the advice is to slow down (see also). It must be the contrarian nature of my having natal Mercury trine natal Uranus or something! Actually I like this take on Merc rx, in that sometimes no matter what you do, stuff happens.

For me, it’s a bit like this: you try to go down a steep stair as slowly and as carefully as you can, but then you slip and are forced to go with the momentum until you stop. Somehow. Mercury retrograde is like that for me.

Transits of Sep 7, 2009 Mercury stations retrograde in Libra on 7 September 2009, and I have been meaning to blog about the chart for weeks but have been in denial….

From the Ptolemiac aspects at least, it looks to be a challenging day, with only one trine amid a grand cross and a number of yods. The grand cross is out of sign but because one of the points is the Moon, which moves quite quickly, I’d say it’ll feel like a grand cross nonetheless. And if even if you preferred to dispute the configuration, the retrograde Mercury still forms the apex of a t-square between Mars and Pluto — talk about the potential for explosive conversation!

Mercury is now getting ready to move back into Taurus from Gemini, where it will stay until 30-31 May 2009. Mercury rx in Gemini has made us review communication styles and ideas, while Mercury rx in Taurus will shift the focus back to Taurean ideals of personal comfort and values, practical application, and grounded stability.

959135_phone_girl Be careful of communications going awry, we’re always told, when Mercury goes retrograde. Don’t buy anything important. Don’t sign on the dotted line. Don’t rule out long-lost friends coming out of the woodwork. And so on.

I don’t know if others feel the same way, but when Mercury retrogrades, especially around the station, I actually feel — and I’ve watched this over a few retrogrades — an increased agitation and anxiety, and thus a greater need to communicate. I wondered in an early post about whether that phenomenon was in fact a signal to pay attention the state of anxiety itself, and as a result be compelled to learn to slow down.

Mercury is very close to its station retrograde in Gemini, only hours away. This period is also known as the ‘storm’. A planet in station is supposed to hold its energy in concentration.

Mercury retrograde in Gemini suggests that communications may be delayed or slowed, or ideas reviewed. In addition, words may be misunderstood, speech misheard, intentions misread.

While I don’t believe that planetary transits ’cause’ anything to happen, I sometimes wonder whether the energies offer up the conditions under which you will be compelled to review your actions.

This is my favourite Mercury retrograde revelation this period (Aquarius rules technology).

Apparently, the new Presidential team, all Macintosh users, who mounted Obama’s savvy campaign with the best of technology, are more than a bit perplexed by the shortage of laptops, outdated Microsoft software on clunky PCs, even disconnected phone lines, in the White House.

Sometimes I wonder how America (or GWB, at least) managed to sustain ‘the most powerful country in the world’ narrative at all.
