A Mississippi newspaper has issued a formal apology for its previous coverage of civil rights issues — news going back and revising past news — that’s a Mercury retrograde story if I ever saw one! And also true to the humanitarian, visionary, and unpredictable nature of Aquarius. I am reminded of Maya del Mar’s comment which I quoted in one of the first posts on Mercury retrograde in Aquarius:

In Aquarius we look to the future. With the retrograde, we return to the past. Thus with Mercury retrograde in Aquarius, we can move through time, get a sense of history and its consequences, and see patterns and the big picture.

In addition, most of this retrograde period occurs during the Aquarius month of the year, when individualism, change, reform, and revolution are most energized. It’s the perfect time to re-evaluate the status quo and to uncover previously unseen truths. (2001 original here)

If anyone needs a potted history of the American Civil Rights Movement, have a look at the Wikipedia entry.

What’s interesting, for me, is the paper regretting complicity by omission:

We did it through omission, by not recording for our readers many of the most important civil rights activities that happened in our midst, including protests and sit-ins. That was wrong. We should have loudly protested segregation and the efforts to block voter registration of black East Mississippians.

And then in the same breath also advocates the casting aside of ideology in supporting Obama’s historical inauguration by drawing a parallel with GWB post-9/11!:

The same as Americans put aside political ideology in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks on our soil on Sept. 11, 2001, to support President George W. Bush, we should now respect and rally to the historical significance and symmetry of the civil rights movement and Barack Obama’s inauguration as president.

In psychoanalysis, this phenomenon of conflating two apparently unrelated events into a composite is called ‘condensation‘. And what does condensation point to? Repression, of course. Condensation, however, offers a glimpse into what must be an internal struggle of titanic proportions to come to terms with old systems being dismantled, and yet not being entirely comfortable with the new one.

Mercury is now edging ever closer to the Sun, both to meet at 0+° Aquarius on Inauguration Day, on 20 January 2009 (charts cast by Dena Decastro may be found here). Planetary energies are at the most concentrated on the cusp of signs and a conjunction on that cusp even more so. I looked up the Sabian symbol for 0-1° Aquarius. It reads:

An Old Adobe Mission In California

In other words, an old crumbling building in an arid desert landscape (someone’s offered an image on the Aeclectic Tarot forum), once a mission. Will it be rebuilt or abandoned? Patched up or completely rebuilt? We’ll know soon enough.

I’ll leave you with an indeterminate conclusion by way of this video:

Although it is basically an advertisement for the inauguration, I’m not sure I’ve heard a politician of any status* broadcast the minutiae of event logistics — text message numbers, websites, information services — much less one to his own inauguration. This shift, for me, speaks more than any policy announcement that could be made.

*If there are, I stand corrected, but I reckon most still rely on personal assistants and low-paid interns to do the job.
