Aquarius is a fixed sign, but I’ve always viewed it as the nominal mutable, just like Virgo can seem like the nominal fixed sign. This is because the energy of Aquarius is inventiveness, but it is an inventiveness focussed on individuality, yet expressed in relation not so much to ’society’ as defined by the institutional structures of Capricorn, but to the more fluid sense of a collective humanity. (Famous Aquarians include Virginia Woolf, Abraham Lincoln, and Yoko Ono.)

This is so funny, it deserves its own post! I mentioned that one of the effects of this Mercury retrograde was that I haven’t been getting any mail, not even junk mail, for the past three weeks. I was about to wait for Mercury to go direct before I rang the Post Office, thinking, as this is a semi-rural area, it might be held up for whatever reason.

Aquarius is a visionary, forward-looking sign. Mercury in Aquarius allows its communicative energies to be expressed in quite an intellectual, ‘big picture’, way. Mercury retrograding, however, emphasises, not looking forward, but looking back; revision, re-assessment, re-thinking of old ideas and ways of being. In some ways, Mercury retrograding in Aquarius is something of a contradiction, or a contest between forward and backward movements through time.
