Mercury retrogrades from 9° 4′ Scorpio to 23° 23′ Libra from 11 October to 1 November 2007. The back-end shadow period lasts from 22 September to 10 October and the front-end shadow period from 2 November to 17 November 2007.

This is a list of events that occurred during this period. It will be updated periodically until 17 November 2007.

Back-end shadow period, 22 September to 10 October 2007:

  • 21 September to 4 October 2007 — Protests in Burma. An echo of protests in March 1988, following the election of September 1987.

Event timeline: The protests come to a head on 8 August 1988. 26 August 1988, Aung San Suu Kyi becomes the face of the fight for Burmese democracy. 18 September 1988, the order for the military to shoot into the crowd is acted on.

Interesting fact — these are the mercury retrograde dates for 1988:

    16 October to 6 November 1987 — 13° 13′ Scorpio to 27° 24′ Libra
    2 February to 23 February 1988 — 28° 4′ Aquarius to 12 ° 41′ in Aquarius
    31 May to 24 June 1988 — 26° 47′ Gemini to 18° 09′ Gemini
    28 September to 20 October 1988 — 27 ° 04′ Libra on to 11 ° 39′ Libra

  • 4 to 6 October 2007 — Royal Mail strike. Again.

  • 9 October 2007 — .asia launches
  • 10 October 2007 — English judge rules on Al Gore’s film

Retrograde period, 11 October to 1 November 2007:

  • 12 October 2007 — Al Gore wins Nobel Peace Prize for raising environmental awareness, two days after a judge in England rules that his film contains ‘errors’ (Gore’s film won the Oscar when Merc was rx in Pisces earlier this year, 25th February)
  • 12 October 2007 — the Royal Mail and the postal workers union reach a deal, and the strike ends
  • 15 October 2007 — shock announcement of the resignation of the leader of the Liberal Democrat Party in the UK; and typical in its lack of reflexivity, the media reports how the ‘media’ was in part the reason for his departure
  • 17 October 2007 — the UK announces plans to stake a claim to part of the Antartica for its oil, gas and mineral reserves, to expected condemnation from environmental groups; it is worth remembering that Scorpio is ruled by Pluto, Lord of the Underworld, and that Pluto also rules oil and other underground activities and resources, so mining and oil drilling are in a sense Scorpionic activities
  • 18 October 2007 — One Million Voices people’s summit for peace in Israel and Palestine is postponed
  • 18 October 2007 — more chaos in the broadcast industry in the UK: both with the BBC and ITV

Front-end shadow period, 2 November to 17 November 2007:

  • 4 November 2007 — State of emergency declared in Pakistan
  • 5 November 2007 — Google unveils mobile phone software

  • 20 November 2007 — Shocking news revealed that the British government loses bank details of 25 million people dating back to 18 October 2007

Is it just me, or is this one of the most intense Mercury retrogrades in the past two years? There is other stuff going on astrologically, however, as this is the last retrograde in the Water signs after two years, the sheer number of incidents to do with communications going awry makes me feel like Scorpio is squeezing out every last drop. I’ve clearly not been able to log every salient event, but those that I have recorded have such far-reaching consequences that it’s hard to feel the relief that usually comes when Mercury stations direct.

Mars is retrograding now. I feel like hibernating already.
